Goddess of Kostenki
26,000–24,000 BCE
Limestone – 3.9″ high
Discovered in 1879 on the west bank of the
Don river near the village of Kostenki, Ukraine

kostenkiKostenki was found in 1879 at an important archaeological site of mammoth bone dwellings in the Ukraine containing a number of other goddess figures. With the absence of facial features and pronounced breasts and buttocks, Kostenki exhibits physical characteristics common to other Goddess figures across a broad geographical range. Her incised bracelets and halter, however, are unique to the area where she was discovered.
