Goddess of Moravany
24,000–22,000 BCE
Mammoth ivory – 3″ high
Found near Moravany nad
Vahom, Slovakia

Cornelia Kavanagh moravany Goddess of Moravany Accidently plowed up by a farmer in 1938, Moravany is Slovakia’s oldest known artwork. Her heavy breasts and enlarged abdomen indicate pregnancy, as does her exaggerated vulva area. Scholars speculate she was carved without a head. Perhaps its absence had something to do with religious ritual. Emphasizing the carving marks left by stone tools that are such a dominant aspect of her identity, I felt a strong connection with her creator.
